The Science Behind Pet Therapy: It’s Not Just Anecdotal

HOW PETS IMPROVE MENTAL HEALTH AND EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING

Wondering if there is scientific evidence to support the mental health benefits of pets? A recent study has found that pet owners are 41% less likely to suffer from depression. It turns out that spending quality time with our pets can lead to a decrease in stress hormones like cortisol and an increase in the feel-good hormone oxytocin.

Here’s where our pets work their magic. Interactions with them trigger a relaxation response in our bodies. And it has been proven that activities like stroking, petting or even just being in the presence of a loved pet can increasingly decrease cortisol levels. The calming effect is thought to be the release of oxytocin the ‘love hormone or bonding hormone’.

When we interact with our pets, especially through physical touch or eye contact both humans and animals experience the oxytocin experience, increasing that bonding, affection and contentment, what a feeling!

In addition to feeling all warm and fuzzy, pets are wonderful companions, especially to the elderly and dealing with loneliness. As we age our social circles start to shrink and the loss of loved ones can leave an empty feeling. Pets have a wonderful way of filling that void filling our lives with companionship and alleviating the pangs of loneliness. Their affectionate nature provides a sense of purpose with daily routines and responsibilities, they become our confidants and listeners to all the great stories.

Studies have shown it’s not just the elderly that benefit but also children for dealing with stress or anxiety, the gentle purring of a cat or the wagging tail of a dog almost has the magical ability to soothe worried hearts.

As a parent or a caregiver, you’ll find that having a pet in the family not only brings joy but helps your children develop empathy, responsibility, and a deeper connection to the world around them.

Pets are more than just cute companions they are emotional lifesavers
